New Downtown Street Signs
I noticed these a couple of weeks ago, but only now got the chance to snap a few photos. It looks like they’ve replaced the streets signs on Congress with new “Historic District” black signs with white writing. The east-west streets also now show their old tree names in addition to the numbered streets.
Most people are probably aware that 6th Street was once Pecan Street since there’s a festival of the same name and there’s also the Old Pecan Street Cafe. Apparenlty, 3rd Street was Cypress. Another little tidbit that many don’t notice is that the majority of the north-south streets between Lamar and I-35 are not only named after Texas rivers, but they’re named in geographic order as well with Sabine being the farthest east and Rio Grande the farthest west. This Austin360 feature has more on the history and crazy pronunciation of Austin street names.
Sacramento joins the Metblog Crew
Did you feel that? Metroblogging just grew by another city. Sacramento is our latest claim in the quest for global blogging domination. I must say that my only impressions of Sacramento are from the Mavs-Kings playoffs series of the last few years…something about cowbells.
You may now commence the rampant speculation over which city will be #50.
Country Club Creek Trail
There’s a story in today’s Statesman about the work being done on the new Country Club Creek Trail. I’ve been on the mailing list for this for quite some time and watching its development. There’s a core group of people that have been working with the city for the past couple of years to make this new trail a reality. There’s been a great alliance between the city, involved citizens and local businesses that have allowed this project to move at a rapid pace.
If you’d like to get involved, check out the Country Club Creek Trail Yahoo Group. They organize volunteer workdays (just had one yesterday as a matter of fact) to clear the trail which will eventually stretch from Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Park at 8600 Grove Dr. to Mabel Davis Park at 3427 Parker Ln and ultimately McKinney Falls, assuming it survives the recently reported budget shortfalls and lack of funding. Once the trail is completed, it’ll be a great addition to the city park system and the developing east/southeast neighborhoods. Congratulations to all those involved. You’ve done an amazing job!
You can find a larger version of the trail map image included in this article in the Files section of the Yahoo Group
Update (2006.07.17): News8Austin also carried the story.
Letting del.icio.us autopost my links for the day has turned this into a bookmark blog. It wouldn’t be so bad if I’d actually post something here once in a while. I’ve been channelling most of my blogging energy over at the Austin Metblog. I resurrected the sidebars that show what I’m currently reading, listening to, watching. I’m using the AMM plug-in for that. It’s pretty sweet. I never did port over the comments from the old blog. I may get around to that this weekend. There are at least three or four other projects that I’ve started, but never finished.
I’ve been spending a lot of time with my new obsession, Rescue Me. I think I blew it off originally because I thought it was going to focus too much on 9/11. I probably also dismissed it because Denis Leary has had so many failed TV shows. I’ve always found his stand-up a mediocre substitute for Bill Hicks. However, the show is amazing. It’s funny. It doesn’t pull any punches. All of the characters are flawed, but you are drawn in by them. The second season finale is what grabbed me and then the new season has kept me. I picked up the first two seasons on DVD a couple of weeks ago from Target. They were a steal at $19.99.
Home life has been filled mostly with finishing the bathroom remodel that began at the end of March. Now that it’s actually finished, I intend to get a little before-after action going on Flickr. Look for that this weekend. We watched a lot of World Cup last month and mourned the Mavs loss in the NBA finals to the Heat.
My in-laws bought a house two blocks away and are in the process of remodeling that. It appears they’ll move here in September or October if nothing changes. The Boy has various summer camps this month.

He didn’t list it, but he’ll be on the MorningX with Mike and Jason tomorrow morning on 101X as well.
I loved Clerks and the latest installment looks pretty good from the previews. The original was released just about a year after I left my job as an itinerant Sound Warehouse employee. From the summer of 1990 to late 1992, I worked at three locations: Coit Rd in Richardson, the 10th and Lamar here in Austin, which is now a Whole Earth Provision Company and I spent the most time at the 49th and Burnet Road location. My favorite scene from Clerks was the montage of video customers, especially the one who says “Do you have that one with that guy who was in the movie that was out last year?” Classic. I can’t tell you how many times I heard nearly the same question.
It looks like there are still some balcony seats available for the premiere with a Q&A session with Smith in attendance at $37/person for non-AFS members after service charges. I didn’t want to see it that badly.
ACL 2006 Schedule Grid and One-Day Passes Tomorrow
Here’s your chance to buy only one day of dust instead of three.
Austin City Limits Festival 2006 will release schedule grids and make a limited number of single day passes available tomorrow for $50 a pop plus service charges, shipping and your first born child.
If they put Ted Leo, Aimee Mann, Nada Surf, Flaming Lips, Massive Attack, Gnarls Barkley and Ween on the same day, maybe I’ll buy one. Otherwise, I’m sticking to my boycott and catching one or two of those on the inevitable alternate shows. There’s nothing on the Stubb’s schedule for that weekend yet. The festival runs Sept. 15-17th this year.
Update (4pm): I just got the official e-mail about tomorrow. I’ll say three things:
- They’ve definitely improved their e-mail system. I’d subscribed multiple addresses after having so many problems with the first pre-sale and I got all of them within 6 minutes of each other.
- The e-mail addresses the dust situation:
Shade and Water: Bring Your Mittens
As we speak, water cannons are irrigating the park every day, and the new sprinkler system is about to begin sating the thirsty earth. Also, as promised, our shade and water programs are taking shape to enhance your comfort and hydration. Can you say, “Brrrr…”? - You can also get to the schedule already: Day1, Day2, Day3
Local reaction to Mumbai blasts
You’ve no doubt heard about the blasts in Mumbai, India by now. Being a member of a world-wide network of bloggers always makes things seem a little closer to home, but during major events or tragedies like this, it’s even more so.
The bloggers at the Mumbai Metblog have been posting their reactions to the horror, giving some background for those of us who may not be as familiar with India’s largest city and pointing out where you can go for help. Our thoughts go out to all those affected by the blasts.
