So, it’s official. Either I or someone in my immediate family has amassed way too much bad karma, broke a mirror or pissed off the wrong <INSERT DEITY HERE>. In addition to having our downstairs flood back in March, our three-year-old car needing a new transmission and multiple illnesses for various family members, our washing machine decided to die Sunday night and send water into the laundry room and garage. I’m guessing it’s a cracked tub, so it’s a goner.

On the bright side, this is the washer that we got for free from Scott and Colleen nearly 8 years ago when we moved into the house. Before Sunday, the only thing it needed was to have the mixing valve replaced by yours truly for $20. (I’m still patting myself on the back for that one). The Wife is delirious with new washing machine facts and stats. We’d better decide on one soon or we’re all going to be either very dirty or naked.

We finally got new carpet into the bedroom on Friday. It’s pretty sweet. All we have to do now is finish painting the front room, rip up the entryway tile, and rip up the linoleum and paint the fireplace and built-in in the den so we can have the laminates put into those two rooms. We also need to have a massive garage sale. All of this is on hold until next week though as we have out-of-town guests this weekend. Anybody want a slightly-broken and very used washer?

This one’s for all the parents out there:

The setup:
I came back to my desk late this morning after a meeting to find a voicemail waiting for me. We acquired some new patio furniture for the backyard from my parents. I spent most of Sunday morning mowing and then spraying for mosquitos so that The Wife and The Kids could enjoy the yard. We’re also trying to get a playscape for the kids sometime in the near future, depending on how much we shell out on the new flooring, etc. The Wife was calling to say that they were enjoying the yard.

Wow, that wasn’t a very relaxing Memorial Day weekend.

We drove to Dallas to say farewell to the house my parents have lived in since the summer of 1975 (or was it 1976?). Anyway, they’re selling the place and moving to Oklahoma of all places. It’s a long story. We rented a truck yesterday and hauled a few things back with us since my parents’ new place is a bit smaller. Loading up a truck, driving from Dallas to Austin, then unloading and returning the truck makes for quite a long day. I hadn’t done that in quite some time and I can’t say that I missed it. On top of moving stuff from Dallas, work is very busy right now. I’m just not feeling the start of summer. Perhaps later this month I’ll have a bit of breathing room.

I posted a quick recap and linked a few photos over on Austin Metblog, which, if I hadn’t already pointed out, has its RSS feed linked over there on the left in the Austin Metblog box. David and Sofia took some pictures of The La with Teo. You can busy yourself with those and the video of The Wife hula-hooping until I get a chance to update the pictures of the week with a few of our shots from the festivities. Observant readers will note that The La picked out the very same dinosaur tattoo and had it placed the opposite cheek as The Boy did at Eeyore’s in 2002. Check the archive for April 27th, 2002. Creepy.

Update: I added an album to the Photos section of the Main Menu. You’ll have to be logged-in to see it.

Max needs bags? Well, so do we, but hopefully not for much longer. Like Max and Courtney, we resorted to using grocery and take-out bags to dispose of our small creature by-products.

The difference is that our small creature is well on her way to using the potty instead. Can I get an amen? With any luck, we soon won’t be filling up the landfills with plastic encased nuclear diapers. Even better, we won’t be buying the damn things anymore. Man, they’re expensive. Getting rid of that cost will subsidize my morning Starbucks habit (I know, I know, I should use a local shop. Anybody have a good alternative near Braker and Mopac other than Texpresso, which I can’t stand?) and the gym membership that I still pay for, but never use.

Damn you, automatic credit card billing!

As I’ve probably already mentioned, the rest of the family was in Dallas this past weekend. The Wife was attending a Kriya Yoga shindig and, since my parents are still there, the kids spent a fair amount of time at their place.

My mother took both kids to mass on with her. Now, I’m lapsed Catholic. When I was growing up, we went to church each Sunday, but other than that and the theology classes that I took in school, religion wasn’t really a part of our daily family life. Anyway, The Wife and I don’t currently attend church or expose the kids to much organized religion. The only current spiritual guidance they get is when they attend the Kriya events with The Wife. I’m having an internal debate about the ramifications of this, but that’s a whole ‘nother post.

At the mass that the kids attended, they called attention to a group of people who are in the process of becoming members of the church. This apparently spurred a discussion between The Boy and my mother about different religions. She explained to him that there were different religions like Judaism, Catholicism, Muslim, etc. After some discussion, The Boy proclaimed, “I know what I am! Texan!”

We’re still wading through the insurance morass with the house. Just so we didn’t get too complacent, the transmission on the minivan that we’ve barely had for a year decided to die.

Yes, that’s right, the transmission on a three-year-old car with 38k miles went out. We were seeing signs of the problem last month and got it in under the three year warranty time limit, but, like an idiot, I forgot that it’s mileage or years, whichever comes first. We hit the mileage sometime earlier this year. Luckily, Honda is standing by their crappy transmission and covering the cost of replacing it.

They were waffling on paying for the rental car while it’s being fixed, but they got as far as trying to install the new transmission Monday only to find that they had been sent the wrong one. The service advisor claimed that it’s the first time that’s ever happened in the 5 years he’s been there. Did I mention how good our luck has been the last couple of months? Anyway, now that they’re delaying the fix, I think they’re going to pony up for the rental as well. I know that the 2000 and 2001 Odysseys have extended warranties for their transmissions. It’s not officially the case with the 2002 Odysseys, but it appears that they aren’t any better than their predecessors.

We spent the afternoon at the Flyrite Choppers Open House yesterday. I blogged about the generalities over on Metroblogging. It was the first time that either of the kids have had a chance to see me play drums. I took about a 4 year hiatus because it was just too much to be in a band and have small children. I think they really enjoyed it. It must’ve wiped out The La. She was asleep before we got halfway home and stayed that way for a couple of hours.

I updated the “picture of the week”. The Boy’s is from yesterday. The La’s is from a couple of weeks ago when The Boy was out of town on spring break with Nana. We didn’t get any decent shots of her yesterday.

This one’s been repeated a few times of the last couple of days, so I thought I’d post it.

The kids were getting ready for a story just before bed. We do the story in The La’s room. We’re currently reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The Boy is digging it. The La usually just picks another book and looks at it. Eventually, she gets tired and goes to sleep, usually before I finish reading to The Boy.

Anyway, The Wife came in just before we started reading to say goodnight to the kids. As she was talking to The La, The La was standing in her crib, nudging a sippy cup of water with her foot.

The La: “That’s my water.”

The Wife: “Who knew?”

The La (after a pause): “Lily.”

The Wife (laughing): “You’re cute.”

The La: “No, I Lily.”

As I hinted last week, we had some major shit go down at the house last Tuesday. Somehow, our downstairs toilet clogged and then continued to overflow after The Wife and Kids left the house at 11am. They didn’t return home until roughly that evening to find water flowing out the front door. All three of the downstairs rooms (our bedroom, family room and living room) were soaked. They ripped out all of the carpet and padding from those three rooms on Wednesday and we had 3 dehumidifiers and 12 fans running constantly from Wednesday evening to this morning when we were pronounced dry and they hauled them all away. I can’t wait to see my electric bill for this month. No idea of the insurance company helps with that. I’m gonna ask.

We’re now left with concrete slab in two rooms and ugly white linoleum of an indeterminate vintage in one. My task for tonight is to use my newly bought crowbar to pull up all of the tackboard from the three rooms so we can safely walk the downstairs without shoes.

We’re supposed to get the first estimate from the insurance company today for the wall repair. For those not familar with water damage remediation, they remove your baseboards and drill 1″ holes every few feet at that level to allow for drying. In two of the rooms, we’ll just get taller baseboards to cover the holes. In the family room, which is all that lovely 70’s wood panelling, we’ll be getting all new walls. I think we’re going to replace with drywall. The adjuster thought that wall repair would come in under the deductible, so no $$ for us just yet. We’re supposed to hear from the insurance company sanctioned floor vendors today or tomorrow. There’s also some furniture that’ll have to be replaced, some that’ll be repaired, an area rug that needs to be cleaned before we decide if it’s salvageable and we’ve got some books that’ll need to be replaced as well.
