{"id":1729,"date":"2007-06-01T15:16:07","date_gmt":"2007-06-01T20:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/austin.metblogs.com\/2007\/06\/01\/todays-national-doughnut-day-free-doughnuts\/"},"modified":"2007-06-01T15:16:07","modified_gmt":"2007-06-01T20:16:07","slug":"todays-national-doughnut-day-free-doughnuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thechunk.com\/blog\/archive\/todays-national-doughnut-day-free-doughnuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Today&#039;s National Doughnut Day: Free Doughnuts!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to my Metroblogging brethren in <a href=\"http:\/\/sanjose.metblogs.com\/archives\/2007\/06\/free_krispy_kreme_doughnut_tod.phtml\">San Jose<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/dc.metblogs.com\/archives\/2007\/06\/free_doughnut_d_2.phtml\">DC<\/a>, today is National Doughnut Day and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.krispykreme.com\/\">Krispy Kreme<\/a> is giving away a free doughnut to honor the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t verified with the Stassney or the 183 locations that they&#8217;re participating, so don&#8217;t blame me if you get down there and they tell you to screw off. The free doughnut isn&#8217;t really all that special since they seem to make a habit of giving out a free one when you&#8217;re standing in line. At least they do at the Stassney location when I&#8217;m there on Sunday mornings.<\/p>\n<p>Not coincidentally, I suppose, Metroblogging LA <a href=\"http:\/\/blogging.la\/archives\/2007\/06\/las_best_donuts.phtml\">points to a list of America&#8217;s Best Doughnuts<\/a>. I saw Voodoo doughnuts in Portland, OR featured in an episode of Anthony Bourdain&#8217;s No Reservations. It was drool worthy. There aren&#8217;t any Texas shops on the list. I know people are partial to Shipley&#8217;s and there are fans of Round Rock doughnuts. Dale Rice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statesman.com\/blogs\/content\/shared-gen\/blogs\/austin\/dalestable\/entries\/2007\/05\/01\/pile_of_doughnuts.html\">blogged last month<\/a> that Dunkin Donuts will be adding five locations here over the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>Have we gotten far enough past the Atkins craze that people are eating these again? Are there any other local shops we&#8217;re missing? I&#8217;m all for the fat doughy goodness. I&#8217;m still pissed off at Starbucks for instituting that no trans fats deal. Their pastries taste like shit now.
