{"id":1723,"date":"2007-05-29T16:10:29","date_gmt":"2007-05-29T21:10:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/austin.metblogs.com\/2007\/05\/29\/google-maps-time-warp\/"},"modified":"2007-05-29T16:10:29","modified_gmt":"2007-05-29T21:10:29","slug":"google-maps-time-warp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thechunk.com\/blog\/archive\/google-maps-time-warp\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Maps Time Warp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ben Wear&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/content\/news\/stories\/local\/05\/28\/28wear.html\">transportation column<\/a> in the Statesman this weekend pointed out something that&#8217;s been annoying me for at least a year: Google&#8217;s map data for Austin is sorely outdated.<\/p>\n<p>I realize that it takes some time to get updated satellite images and that they can&#8217;t possibly keep every location on earth up-to-date, but it&#8217;s been more than 3 years since they&#8217;ve updated the downtown satellite imagery. How do I know? Take a look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;hl=en&amp;q=517+e+sixth+street,+austin,+tx&amp;sll=37.0625,-95.677068&amp;sspn=25.704151,59.765625&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=30.266476,-97.742556&amp;spn=0.000853,0.001824&amp;t=k&amp;z=19&amp;om=1\">Frost Bank Tower<\/a> at the corner of 4th and Congress. It was completed by January of 2004 and construction began in November of 2001. In the Google Maps image, it&#8217;s clear that the top of the tower hasn&#8217;t been completed. This data is probably from 2003.<\/p>\n<p>I guess that&#8217;s one benefit to a rapidly changing landscape due to new condo and building development.
