So, you’ll all be hanging out with us this weekend and perhaps the foreseeable future? Excellent. I’m afraid you’re out of luck getting tickets to ACL, but there’s plenty of other stuff going on. I’ll throw in a plug for my own band, The Bad Rackets, playing tonight around 10pm at Beerland.

I’ve already noticed an impact this morning. The traffic heading east on Ben White, FM 969 and US 183 on my commute was much worse than usual. I pass the Delco Center on the way to work. The parking lot was full of both cars and people. News8 confirms that it has reached capacity and LBJ High School is the next location to be filled. I also noticed an Austin Fire Department truck with signs indicating they had hurricane evacuee information at the intersection just south of the Delco Center on US 183.

Here’s hoping all of our houses are spared. I’ve got some trees and a rickety fence that might not survive 60-100mph winds.

Update (1:25PM CDT): Current forecasts have Rita veering a fair amount east of us. It’s bad news for Louisiana and southeast Texas, but it probably means that we’re not going to get much more than a better- than-average rainstorm around here. I have to echo some of the other sentiments I’ve seen from local bloggers. Austinites need to chill. There’s no reason for us to be running around hoarding water, gas and plywood.

We’re only three days out from the “relly big shew” and it’s time to go over what we’ve learned, class. First, let’s examine history lest we be doomed to repeat it. I had two posts last year recapping my first ACL. The tone is a bit cranky. I made good on my threat and only bought a pass for Sunday this year. On the other hand, I’m still paying more that I would have if I’d gotten a 3-Day Pass when they were first released, so that shows you how smart I am. I did try that first morning, but even with a cable modem connection, I was unable to get through.

I dredged up a few more recap and tips posts from Jon and Adam and some good advice here. ACL Festival has their own here.

As I mentioned last year, if you’re trying to meet someone there, you’re best bet is to agree on a predetermined landmark and time. Cell phone usage was impossible last year. I was able text message though. The other tradition is come up with some sort of flag or totem that stretches at least 10 feet into the air. The problem is coming up with something sufficiently original so as not to be confused with another group. Yes, there are that many of them.

It looks to be almost certain that Rita will make Saturday a wet affair You can bring an umbrella and I’d recommend bringing the allotted two factory-sealed water bottles no larger than 16 oz. You can check out the list of stuff you can and can’t bring here. It looks like they’re allowing chairs again, but only in designated areas. I didn’t have as much of a problem with the chairs as some people did. We’ll see how that goes.

As far as the food, it looks like many of the same vendors. It’s nice to see that they’re sticking with the locals. I’ll be camped at the Hudson’s On The Bend booth. The Hot & Crunchy Chicken Cone and the Venison Sausage Wrap are the shit. If you’re from out of town, try a cheesesteak from Texadelphia, but you have to get it with the mustard blend sauce, trust me. Amy’s Ice Cream is also not to be missed. Go with the Mexican Vanilla.

Anybody else have anything they want to add?

NRA vs. ConocoPhillipsA new morning routine has started taking me past the pictured billboard out on FM 969 east of 183. I’ve been wondering what the hell it was about for the past couple of weeks and finally decided to take a picture and look it up. You can get most of the story from the NY Times (usual newspaper registration disclaimer, bugmenot, blah). I’m not going to get into the politics, but I find it interesting that they’re singling out ConocoPhillips and not Halliburton since Halliburton is also involved in the same suit that’s got the NRA printing up these billboards. I also find it interesting that the billboard is so far out of town.

Enjoy your last free Paul Krugman op-ed. After this one, rumor has it that he and the other NY Times op-ed mavens will be hidden behind the lock and key of subscriptions. CNN.com saw the error of their ways and restored free access to video after trying to get people to pay for it. Here’s to hoping that the NY Times as the same revelation. I know the special seekret way to see archives of the Statesman via my public library account. I wonder if that’s the way around this too? Stay tuned…

Update: Sure enough, I can still get my Krugman fix via the Austin Public Library Reference Databases – Newspapers & Current Events page. From there, I just hit the Remote Access link for InfoTrac, entered my library card number and then searched for Krugman in articles dated since Aug. 31. I was presented with his latest editorial, “The Way It Is” at the top of the list. Hooray for Austin Public Library and TexShare.

Tragic mistake

I noticed a headline in today’s Statesman as I was waiting to get my morning caffeine dose. Apparently, someone in this year’s Hands On A Hard Body competition in Longview snapped during the competition, walked to a K-Mart across the street, threw a trash can through the front window, went to the sporting goods section, got a shotgun and some shells and proceeded to shoot himself in the head.

There’s an unfortunate typo in the description of the contest, but I’m not sure if it’s the Statesman or Longview News-Journal’s fault or if it’s only in the online version.

In this annual contest, contestants try to keep one hand on a new truck at a Nissan dealership in Longview for as long as possible. The winner gets the truck. Last year’s winner hung on for 117 consecutive hours. This was the contest’s 13th year.

Rules:

  • There are 24 competitors.
  • Contestants must live within 100 miles of the Longview area.
  • No gun chewing or nicotine products allowed.
  • No leaning, squatting, sitting or lying down.
  • 5-minute breaks every hour. Every eight hours, there is a 15-minute break.

Update: I guess I should’ve taken a screenshot, becuse they’ve fixed it. It was there. Really. I’m not that sick. No, really.

The Wife, The Boy and I got babysitting for The Girl and headed out to the big Weezer and Foo Fighters Rawk show last night at Erwin Center. I blogged it at Metroblogging (it’s also in the Austin Metblog sidebar over there on the left) which links pictures (they allowed cameras). I’ll have some crappy digital camera video up tonight along with a picture of the week update with a photo from last night’s festivities. The Boy was definitely dragging on the way to school this morning. I warned one of his teachers who said she was jealous that he got to go and she didn’t. We’ll see what reports we get when The Wife picks him up later today.

I could see people commenting on The Boy’s presence at the show. Since we were on the floor, we had to hold him up so that he could see. My arms, legs and back are paying the price today. Luckily, Andy was there to hold him part of the time and The Wife pitched in as well. Weezer kept it pretty clean. Dave Grohl, on the other hand, had me wanting to cover The Boy’s ears a few times (Earmuffs!) even though he was already wearing ear plugs. Thankfully, I think most of the comments went straight over his head. I think he really liked the Weezer show. He’s a little more familiar with them and they went on first. By halfway through the Foo Fighters, you could see that he was getting tired and a little overloaded.

ACL Festival 2005 draws ever closer

This is sure to be the first of many posts on the upcoming ACL Festival (aka The-Big-Annual-Austin-Music-Festival -Other-Than-SXSW) from myself and the other Austin Metbloggers. Our little group blog was born just after the festival last year, so this is our first chance to cover it as a group. Stay tuned for plenty more.

With a little more than a week to go until Austin City Limits Festival 2005, the ACL promotors are in full propaganda mode. I just got their latest e-mail which led me to an impressive aerial photo from last year’s festival on the same page as this year’s map. Is that Town Lake Entrance new this year? I don’t recall it being there last year.

You have the option this year of creating a custom schedule or downloading the whole schedule as a pdf or to your ipod. If you’re creating a custom schedule, they give you the option of doing so with or without registering, ostensibly to allow you to retrieve it later or share it with friends, but seeing as they have your e-mail address, I’m sure they won’t be able to resist using it for other purposes. I’d advise skipping the customization altogether though as “customizing” entails being able to check a box and highlight particular boxes on the schedule. The interface looked pretty crappy on both IE and Firefox and didn’t print out any better on my one attempt.

Lastly, the ACL site already does a passable job of this, but the Austinist points out that someone has taken the time to compile bios and mp3 links for every band in this year’s line-up.

weezlogo.jpgAndy and I along with my wife and son checked out the Foo Fighters/Weezer show tonight at the Frank Erwin Center. It was good for the rock. They allow cameras into the shows, so check out the ones that actually came out on my flickr page. We were a little late, so we only caught two or three songs of the opening band, Mae. Each headliner played about an hour and a half. Weezer rotated singers a few times with the drummer singing “Photograph” from the Green Album, while Rivers played drums. Rivers also appeared at the back of the floor halfway through the set for a solo version of “Island In The Sun”. They played a good mix of songs from all of the albums. I was glad they included “Why Bother?” from Pinkerton. They pulled somebody from the crowd to help with “Undone” and finished with “Surfwax America” and “Hash Pipe”. Let’s see what else? “Beverly Hills”, “Peace”, “Such a Pity” and “Perfect Situation” from Make Believe. They opened with “My Name is Jonas”. They showered the audience with confetti near the end of the show.

Foo Fighters followed after I took The Boy up to the mezzanine to get a Weezer shirt. The Foo opened with “In Your Honor”. They played “This is a Call”. We got a solo performance of “Everlong” from Dave Grohl. They covered “Born on a Bayou” as they did at the recent Katrina benefit concert. As with Weezer, we got a song where the frontman and the drummer switched places for “Cold Day in the Sun” from In Your Honor. We also got “All My Life”, “Breakout”, “The Last Song”, “Learn To Fly” and “Stacked Actors” where Grohl enters the audience for a little meet and greet. They ended with “Monkeywrench”.

Update: Andy’s photos from last night are here.

Bikes: From Austin to New Orleans

Jacob Applebaum is a photographer and techie who does work with non-profits and NGOs. He headed down to the Astrodome and then New Orleans with the idea of helping out where he could and documenting what he could. A lot of his stuff is being cross-posted to BoingBoing. Yesterday, he blogged about the arrival of a delivery of bicycles and other supplies from Austin. I wonder if it’s some of those collected by Bicycle Sport Shop?

Free Money

With a title like “Free Money”, I’m guessing this post will get a little more traffic than my usual. What I’m talking about is not really free, but more like found money. A friend recently discovered that her husband had some money waiting for him via the Texas Unclaimed Property website. All you need is a first and last name or business name and a city and you can check to see what’s out there. Of course, to claim it, you’ll need to print out a claim form, sign it, and supply other proof that you’re the dumbass who’s leaving money around so long that the state has claimed it. It’s ok. I’m a dumbass too. I had a rebate check that I lost and the found again several months later. Since it said that it was only good for 90 days, I assumed that I was screwed. I guess I wasn’t screwed and the money somehow ended up at the state comptroller’s office.

Administaff, a company based in Houston that handles HR for many smaller firms in Texas and other states, is apparently no good at giving you money that you’re supposed to have either. I reclaimed some from them just before it went to the comptroller a couple of years ago and my friend had a decent amount of Administaff cash sitting at the comptroller as well. I’m not sure if it’s Administaff’s fault or the firm that we both worked for several years back, but they’re clearly not in any hurry to give you your money because I’ve been at the same address for years.
