dog.jpgIt’s funny what people will get worked up about sometimes. I’d been tending to ignore this dogs-on-patios issue because I thought it was such a silly thing to have a debate about. Apparently, it’s big enough to get City Council members to have press conferences and local attention grabbers to take the opportunity to grandstand. Why the hell does Marc Katz have an opinion on this anyway? Is he intending to run for mayor again this year? Good luck with that.

The issue? Whether or not restaurants should be allowed to have dogs on their patios. Not whether or not they should be able to have them on tables or in the restaurant, but if they’re allowed on an outside patio. I think this whole ruckus started last year when Austin/Travis County Health inspectors started issuing warnings to Freddie’s Place and Austin Java Company among others for having dogs on the patio. This prompted Freddie’s to begin deputizing dogs in an attempt to get around the rule. Now, the City Council has taken up the issue and will have a hearing tomorrow night on whether or not to change the city law and explicitly allow restaurants to choose to allow or not allow dogs on outdoor patios.

I’m wondering who would have a problem with this? I remember several years ago that Gingerman stopped allowing dogs after an incident at Lovejoy’s where a patron was bitten in the face by a dog, but that’s not a health issue. Several people have pointed out as part of the debate that it’s ok to have a grackle shit in your food, but it’s not ok for a dog to be sitting on the ground anywhere near your table? Makes perfect sense.

BTW, that photogenic fellow in the photo is my housemate of nearly 10 years and he has no problem with dogs on the patio as long as they stay away from his ball.

I spotted this over on Pharyngula. I was a little afraid I may have screwed up at least one of these, but happily, I can still pass 8th grade math with flying colors. How about you?

You Passed 8th Grade Math

Congratulations, you got 10/10 correct!

Casino El Camino has finalized their schedule for their own SXSW festivities. They open at noon throughout the festival as opposed to the usual 4pm.

Friday, March 17th

12:30pm Busy Signals (Chicago)
1:30pm Live Fast Die (Chicago)
2:30pm The Sons of Hercules (S.A.)
3:30pm Muck & The Mires (Boston)

Saturday, March 18th
12:30pm Headache City (Chicago)
1:30pm Wide Right (NYC)
2:30pm The Bloody Tears (Austin)
3:30pm The Clutters (Nashville)

For the uninitiated, you want to stop there and get an Amarillo Burger, just make sure you give 30-45 minutes lead time from when you order, more if they’re really crowded.

(Full disclosure: I host the bar’s website, but the burgers really are good. Honest.)

Abe Vigoda’s birthday last week prompted me to install the Abe Vigoda Status plugin for Firefox. I didn’t know that my actions would set off a chain reaction of star deaths over the weekend. Darrin McGavin was my favorite of the bunch. His roles in Christmas Story and Night Stalker make him a much loved actor from my childhood. Jon already posted a remembrance and mentioned his digital cameo in the disappointing attempt at reviving (or is that re-imagining?) Night Stalker last fall. Abe Vigoda was on a flight I took from NYC to Dallas when I was living there in the mid-90’s. I said a brief hello. He was showing his age a bit then, but he was still flirting with the flight attendants and calling them “sweetheart”. Looks like he’ll outlast them all.

For those friends and family that made it through the site move, I’m obviously behind in moving everything. I’m moving the “Picture of the Week” for the kids to Flickr. I’ll have a Flickr set for each kid. You’ll have to be a Flickr member and I’ll have to mark you as friend or family in order for you to see the set. The Boy’s is there now and I’ll have La’s up by Monday. It appears that the comments didn’t make it through the move either and I’ll have to do a custom import for those. I also still need to see if I can get a Rewrite Rule working so that the old posts in phpNuke will go to the new location in WordPress. Yeah.

Photographer, Flickr dude extraordinaire, Thomas Hawk weighs in on Apple’s announcement of the billionth iTunes download. I think he’s right on and his point is the reason why I’m still uneasy about embracing iTunes. I posted twice about this in the past and, despite actually buying a song from iTunes in August, I’ve only bought one other song since. Both purchases were ones that I’d consider throwaways. If I really want a full album, I’m sticking with CDs. Of course, going that route doesn’t avoid the DRM nightmare as evidenced by the Sony DRM debacle that continues to make news.

EmptyVee has taken notice of local metal throwbacks, The Sword. It appears a media frenzy is building for these local boys steeped in Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin in the run up to SXSW. Is it time to get snarky and say that we found ’em first (barely)?

If you missed them last week, they’ll be playing a showcase at SXSW at Buffalo Billiards on Friday, March 17th at 1am. It appears they’re working on a new website, but there’s nothing there yet.
