I was introduced to Potbelly Sandwich Works on a business trip to Chicago four years ago. The franchise has been around for 30 years and mostly in the Great Lakes area of the country, but it looks like they’re undergoing an expansion.
There are two locations opening up in Austin this Spring, one at the new Arbor Walk shopping center at Braker and Mopac (where I took this picture this morning) and one at 2316 Guadalupe. It looks like it’ll be at least a week or two before the Arbor Walk location opens.
It’ll be a welcome relief for the lunch sandwich market around here. I’ve been sick of Thundercloud for years and I’ve never been a big fan of Quizno’s except for those crazy hamster commercials they ran a couple of years ago. Schlotzsky’s isn’t bad. I’ll hit Delaware and Texadelphia for the occasional cheesesteak. I’ve nearly gotten tired of Jersey Mike’s, but I still don’t mind going there. Subway isn’t really even worth mentioning.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Dude, you made no mention of Jimmy John’s. I used to eat there about 4 times a week until I turned vegan. Great sandwiches!
I was intro’d to potbellys when i lived in Dallas briefly a couple of years ago. i *love* that place, so, so good.
Sammer,
You know, I’ve seen the name, but I’ve never been. That’s why I didn’t mention it.
I’ll have to check it out. It looks like there’s one on Anderson.
I go whenever I am in the big D. I am looking forward to having that in my daily lunch options.
Don’t forget about Which ‘Wich either! Both Jimmy John’s and Which Which serve up some superb sandwhiches.
This is good news.
I grew up near the original Potbelly on Lincoln Ave, and ate their pretty regularly.
For a rare treat try the Broodwich being served at the Alamo Drafthouse on S. Lamar:
It is the Broodwich. The most evil sandwich ever created. Forged in darkness from wheat harvested in hell’s half acre. Baked by Beelzebub. Slathered with mayonnaise beaten from the evil eggs of dark chicken force-fed to dogs by the hands of a one eyed mad man. Cheese boiled from the rancid teat of fanged cow. Layered with 666 separate meats from an animal which has maggots for blood.
Is it possible to rave about a new sandwich restaurant without taking a gratuitous shot at our local hometown chain?
I think so.
Lighten up, Native Austinite.
Saying that I’m sick of something isn’t a shot at it. In fact, it says that I liked it so much that I ate there too much.
Now that we’re talking about Thundercloud though, has anybody else noticed the wide variability in service depending on the location you visit?
Thanks for the mention Tim! Potbelly is thrilled to now call Austin home. We will have several fun events surrounding both openings so stay tuned!
I think that there is another location planned in SW Austin for later this year. My husband runs a business in the Arbor Trails shopping center (anchored by Costco) at Mopac and William Cannon. He mentioned that Potbelly is going into a pad site there. Yay for us Southwesterners!
Austin Biz Journal reports that Potbelly’s CEO loves Austin. I’m not sure I’d infer from his quote that the reason the stores are opening here is that he likes the town. I know there’s already a location in College Station across from the A&M campus. I’m not sure how long that one’s been there.
I almost hyperventilated when I saw Potbelly’s was coming to Austin. I am originally from the Midwest and eat there everytime I go to Chicago.
It will be a fantastic addition to the sandwich shops here. Move over Jimmy Johns, Quiznos, Schlotskys, Texadelphia, Thundercloud, Delaware Subs…A MUCH better sandwich shop is coming to town!!!
