If you’re not one of those people who’ll be stuck in traffic on the way to Dallas, there’s a lot of good live music tonight. I’d recommend any one of the following shows:
- Micah P Hinson – Mohawk (Indoors) 9pm – I saw Micah at his SXSW showcase at Lambert’s this year. I was there to see F*cked Up, but was disappointed by their show and pleasantly surprised by Micah, who played before them, and These Arms Are Snakes, who played after.
- Golden Hornet Project (Graham Reynolds and Peter Stopschinski) doing Big Band Frenzy, followed by Ron Titter Band and Invincible Czars – Ruta Maya – Stopschinski is preparing the title work of the concert, “Big Band Frenzy,” a Rhapsody in Blue tribute (Rhapsody in Blue was originally commissioned composed for a Big Band of similair proportions), arrangements of Perez Prado, Antibalas, and of course Brown Whörnet. People can also expect from Reynolds selections from Golden Arm Trio’s recent album “The Tick Tock Club” as well as some Duke Ellington experiments (the composer/musician has been admittedly a little preoccupied with Ellington lately). The big band lineup features Brannen Temple on drums. The Ron Titter Band includes David Wyatt aka Stinky Del Negro, formerly of Solid Gold 40. Invincible Czars are known for their rendition of the Nutcracker Suite during the holidays.
- Sonic Youth and Meat Puppets – Stubb’s – What’s not to like about this one? Thurston Moore is touring solo in support of his new album, Trees Outside the Academy, and this is one of a handful of Sonic Youth dates on the tour. The Austin-based Meat Puppets also played at SXSW this year and have a new album out.
