Two bits of tech-related news from the city on this Friday afternoon:

  1. The city along with Dell (among others) is sponsoring an e-cycling on the north side of Highland Mall tomorrow from 10am to 3pm. You can drop off computers and related accessories and small household electronics (things like cell phones, radios and DVD players, not TVs or microwaves).
  2. The city is also taking input in a redesign of their web site. The survey can be found here (espanol) and you can get more information about the redesign project here. As a side note, the city’s library online catalog recently underwent an update. The Austinist has a review.

Helmet at Red 7

I found at the last minute yesterday that Helmet was playing Red 7. I’ve been a fan since 1991 or so and don’t miss a chance to see them if I can help it. If I’m remembering correctly, this is the fourth or fifth time I’ve seen them. Granted, the only original member left is Page Hamilton, but it’s still worth checking out. Page’s old bandmate, John Stanier, will be in town this coming weekend for Fun Fun Fun Fest with one of his current bands, Battles. I took a ton of pictures, including this one at the end of the set. You can check out the rest by clicking the photo.

Helmet kicked off the set with the first 5 tracks from Aftertaste in the same order as the record without stopping. They stuck with older material for the rest of the set, only playing one track from last year’s Monochrome, “Swallowing Everything” and “See You Dead” from 2004’s Size Matters. They pulled several off of Strap It On, including “Blacktop” and “Sinatra”, which they apparently haven’t played live in quite a while. Hamilton filled in some back story on the song, inadvertently mentioning the name of the girlfriend who inspired it. He swore us to secrecy. I’ve seen Page take requests from the audience before and he did that last night. There were at least 4 tracks from Betty, including “Wilma’s Rainbow”, “I Know”, “Milquetoast”, and “Tic”. They finished with “In the Meantime” and also played “Unsung”. They had good energy and the club was pretty full. I’m wondering if they’re going to stick with an older set list for most of the tour?

Page clearly likes Austin. He mentioned that they arrived in town on Sunday night and spent some time at Sidebar. They’re headed to Corpus Christi today. You can find the rest of the dates for this tour here.

1473637222_66df85f5b1_o.jpgAlamo South Lamar’s Saturday Morning Film Club is featuring the film adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes tomorrow at noon. It’s free, as in beer, so you’ll want to get there at least a half an hour early to make sure you get a seat.

I’d be all over it, but I’ve got a school carnival that I can’t escape. I saw this in the theater when it was released in 1983. It’s just creepy enough, but not terrifying for the kids and there’s plenty for adults as well. I’d have no qualms bringing my 8-year-old. It’s borderline for a 5-year-old, depending on the kid. The visuals are really great (the whole movie oozes autumn, something we don’t get much of here) and it’s got Jason Robards AND Pam Grier. What more do you want? You have to see it if only to hear Robards deliver the title line from Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

The folks over at Metroblogging San Francisco have a better post about Lance Hahn, his life and his music than I could ever put together, so go check out their eulogy when you have a chance.

Lance was a musician and writer who moved to Austin from San Francisco in 2000. You can check out articles at the Austin American-Statesman and Austinist as well. There’s also a memorial web site with information on services and linking photos and other remembrances.

For me, Lance was one of those guys that you see around town all the time, but don’t really know. I’m not very familiar with his music, but my family and I rent videos from Vulcan Video off South Congress and it’s his familiar face among a few others that I’ll always associate with that location. He was always good for a short chat or a smile about whatever films we were renting and he’s one of those people who, even though you didn’t know him, made your life a little better. It’ll be sad going into Vulcan and not seeing him. Maybe it’s because he was just a few years older than me, but It feels to me like a little part of the Austin that I love has died. My condolences to his family and those close to him.

Anthony Bourdain at the Paramount

1690263629_508be17b0e_m.jpgMy wife and I went to see Tony Bourdain at the Paramount on Saturday night. We’re big fans of both Cooks Tour and No Reservations. My wife worked in the restaurant industry here in town and remembers reading parts of Kitchen Confidential with the kitchen crew at Chez Nous and howling at his description of vegetarians and their “Hezbollah-like splinter faction, the vegans”. The show was completely sold out. Bourdain came out and talked about how amazed and thankful he was for how his life has turned out. He’s still completely shocked that he’s been able to do Cook’s Tour and No Reservations after writing Kitchen Confidential.

He reiterated a lot of the themes that appear in his shows: how food brings people together and how a society’s culture is tied to their food. He referred a lot to specific No Reservations shows, so audience members who weren’t familiar with him probably felt a little left out. Since the Paramount sells season tickets and many people end up picking an unfamiliar performer for at least one show, it was clear there were some people who fell into that category. The annoying jerk of the night award goes to the guy in the upper right balcony who answered a cell phone call during the performance, then stood up while talking and moved out into the right aisle and then slowing walked in front of several rows while still talking. What an inconsiderate a-hole. There was a lengthy Q&A session after his talk. At least half of the questions were pretty bad, but he fielded them all gracefully, including the shouts from overenthusiastic groupies. He recommended Bill Bruford’s Heat and, not surprisingly, named French Laundry and Masa as his top restaurant picks even if you have to rob a bank to get the cash to afford eating at either one.

1622269945_6554cb45fc_m.jpgI noticed a sign a week or two ago in the men’s restroom at the GingerMan. I thought it was a bit odd, but went about my business (heh, heh). Then last night, I was at a demo at the Hyatt downtown and stopped in a restroom off of the lobby where I encountered a similar sign. I was the only one in there, so I decided to risk looking like a perv and pulled out the camphone to get a shot of the sign…the perils of a citizen journalist.

According to the surgeon general, women should not drink alcoholic beverages, including distilled spirits, beer, coolers, and wine during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects.

Is this some crazy new law? Are they in women’s restrooms as well? Are they only in bars (or near them anyway, I suppose this one was near the hotel lobby bar)? Is Warren Chisum somehow involved? Why the hell are there warnings targeted at pregnant women and alcohol in the one place where there shouldn’t be any pregnant women with alcohol: a men’s restroom urinal?

The Upper Crust: Let Them Eat Rocque

crust_closeup_color%28jay_elliott%29.jpgI realize many locals will think pasteries and coffee on Burnet Road when they hear “Upper Crust”, but that’s not what we’re talking about here. No, I’m talking about the legendary fop rock band from Boston, The Upper Crust, who’s coming to Beerland tomorrow night as part of a very short US tour. The Austin date is the only Texas date, followed by two in California and one on New York. This is their first set of live dates in quite some time. It’s a show not to be missed.

If you’re part of the unwashed masses unfamiliar with the band, just think Bon Scott era AC/DC with a healthy dose of Spinal Tap, powdered wigs, and pantaloons. They’ll no doubt play at least a few tracks from their classic album, Let Them Eat Rock (iTunes), which includes tracks like: “Little Lord Fauntleroy”, “Friend of a Friend of the Working Class” and “I’ve Got My Ascot ‘n’ My Dickie”.

From their own site:

Dearest of Friends,

It is with a glad heart that I put aside my ordinarily reticent disposition – for I have long dedicated myself to the attainment of a certain brevity of style in discourse which I believe conveys the discretion appropriate to a gentleman’s gentleman – and announce to one and all that my masters, The Upper Crust, long absent from the stage, are once again prepared to enter the tumultuous affray of Rocque.

So it is that at the risk of speaking perhaps a word in excess, I have the pleasure to relate that very shortly we shall again rejoice in the boundless vigor and cocksure posturing of the Duc D’Istortion with his marvelous electrical guitar; the unflappable composure of the noble Count Bassie, he of the golden throat and throbbing baritone instrument; the rhythmical connivances of Jackie Kickassis, whose mastery of the drums is never more apparent than when he is playing them; and in the strained braying of my Lord Bendover, which is neither more nor less bothersome than the sounds that usually accompany the ritual slaughter of a thousand goats on certain holy days amongst the Musselmen.

Your faithful companion of letters,

Bumbles, manservant and secretary to their lordships The Upper Crust

One Week Until Austin Maker Faire

MAKE_1184.jpgThere’s a little more than a week left until Maker Faire at the Travis County Expo Center, next Saturday and Sunday (October 20th and 21st). According to their web site, discounted ticket sales should’ve ended online yesterday, but the discounted price still appeared this morning. You can also get discounted tickets at Austin Children’s Museum until October 19th. My family and I have our tickets for Sunday (kids 3 years and under are free).

Wondering what Maker Faire is? Here’s a description from their site:

A two-day, family-friendly event that celebrates arts, crafts, engineering, science projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset. It’s for creative, resourceful folks who like to tinker and love to make things. We call them Makers.

Mayor Will Wynn has declared that weekend “Maker’s Weekend”.

Check out a promotional video from the MAKE kids after the jump.

tolls.pngWe all know traffic has been getting progressively worse around here. It also just got more expensive. Two toll stories popped up this morning, one not really helping the other.

Apparently, some of the existing toll equipment around town has double-billed drivers 50,000 times since the toll roads were opened in January. The story mentions that there are three trouble spots, but only identifies the westbound center lane at the Lake Creek toll plaza on Texas 45 North. Makes you want more toll roads, doesn’t it?

The good news is that if you don’t use the existing toll roads enough that you’re concerned about this double-billing, you’re going to get your own chance at double-billing in the not too distant future. CAMPO approved the much maligned tolls to five existing roads last night.

The new tolls will make it pretty much impossible to get to the airport from downtown via a highway without paying a toll. As this handy little map shows, they’re going to toll 183 from Springdale Road to 71 and 71 from Riverside to Thornberry. Those of you with more time on your hands than money can take Montopolis (either from Riverside or Ben White) to Burleson to FM 973 to 71 and approach the airport from the east to avoid that toll. I hope the people on Burleson Road are ready for a traffic increase.

Two of the other tolls, 290 between 183 & 130 and 45 between Mopac & 1626 are too far north or south for me to care too much about. It’s not clear to me where the toll at the Y at Oak Hill starts and ends, but that one might catch me on occasion and will certainly catch all of you Dripping Springs people.

Friday Music Options

If you’re not one of those people who’ll be stuck in traffic on the way to Dallas, there’s a lot of good live music tonight. I’d recommend any one of the following shows:

  • Micah P HinsonMohawk (Indoors) 9pm – I saw Micah at his SXSW showcase at Lambert’s this year. I was there to see F*cked Up, but was disappointed by their show and pleasantly surprised by Micah, who played before them, and These Arms Are Snakes, who played after.
  • Golden Hornet Project (Graham Reynolds and Peter Stopschinski) doing Big Band Frenzy, followed by Ron Titter Band and Invincible CzarsRuta Maya – Stopschinski is preparing the title work of the concert, “Big Band Frenzy,” a Rhapsody in Blue tribute (Rhapsody in Blue was originally commissioned composed for a Big Band of similair proportions), arrangements of Perez Prado, Antibalas, and of course Brown Whörnet. People can also expect from Reynolds selections from Golden Arm Trio’s recent album “The Tick Tock Club” as well as some Duke Ellington experiments (the composer/musician has been admittedly a little preoccupied with Ellington lately). The big band lineup features Brannen Temple on drums. The Ron Titter Band includes David Wyatt aka Stinky Del Negro, formerly of Solid Gold 40. Invincible Czars are known for their rendition of the Nutcracker Suite during the holidays.
  • Sonic Youth and Meat PuppetsStubb’s – What’s not to like about this one? Thurston Moore is touring solo in support of his new album, Trees Outside the Academy, and this is one of a handful of Sonic Youth dates on the tour. The Austin-based Meat Puppets also played at SXSW this year and have a new album out.
