I got this from Dru, who got it from Pandagon. Basically the meme is this–go to Music Outfitters, type the year of your high school graduation into the search function, select the top 100 most popular songs, cut and paste it onto your blog and then bold the ones you like, strike out the ones you hate, and leave alone the ones you don’t care about or don’t know.

Wow. I never really liked the radio very much and looking at that list, it’s clear why. What a total line-up of crap. It’s hard even to get motivated to hate most of that stuff. I don’t recognize quite a few. There’s not a single song on there that I can honestly say that I really liked. Most of the bolded songs are songs that I liked well enough. I can’t be bothered to feel one way or the other about most of it and I actively hated quite a few. I thought this might be a cool meme, but now that I’ve gone through it, I’m left not feeling much of anything. I suppose that’s a good enough commentary on late 80’s pop.

This article nails everything that is right and wrong with my summer TV guilty pleasure. I don’t know if Mr. Anderson is a parent, but the other reason for watching the show was to see the incredible incompetency of most of the parents. I’m always amazed that the parents in Brat Camp, Nanny 911 and that other nanny show that was just like Nanny 911 but on a different channel (I think) were actually willing to display what colossal parenting fuck-ups they were to the entire country in primetime television.

This just in. People aren’t going to see movies in the theater because the majority of the movies that are being released suck ass.

Next up: Spending $1 trillion “to oust a contained, powerless, impotent two-bit dictator and help the remnants establish a pro-Iran Islamic Republic” (from dKos) may not have been such a good idea.

This started out as a post of one link, but I found a few other things in the entertainment world that needed some attention.

  • Samuel L. Jackson, Christina Ricci and Justin Timberlake in a movie called Black Snake Moan where Jackson plays an old blues guy who cures Ricci’s character of nymphomania? Sounds like trip out of remake hell to me.
  • For the Stephen King fans out there, I just discovered that he writes a fairly regular column for Entertainment Weekly. I think the magazine is pretty much crap, but then a lot of people think King is crap too. Screw ’em. (P.S. It looks like you have to be an AOL or EW subscriber to read any of the columns prior to this year. Doh.)
  • This op-ed on Hillary’s crusade against Rockstar and GTA:SA is getting a lot of link love today. I was so pissed at her about it that I had to add to the love. Leave that crap to Leiberman, Hillary.

LinklaterWe took the family to the Harry Potter release party at Bookpeople last night. The Boy dressed in his Harry Potter costume from Eeyore’s earlier this year. He got quite a few compliments, in fact, so much so that a PA from Rick Linklater’s IFC-funded as-yet-untitled 12-year project asked if he’d be interested in being an extra in some filming they’d be doing at the party.

They ended up including the whole family walking behind Eller Salmon and his crew in full Harry Potter regalia up the side of BookPeople from GSD&M. The Boy got a first hand view at the mind-crushingly boring reality of filmmaking. We had to walk up to the party about 10 times before they decided that they had a decent enough shot to move on. They headed over to the Lamar side of the store to do some more shooting at which point we were allowed to rejoin the party. I guess we’ll have to wait for 2016 to see if we made it in the shot and avoided the cutting room floor.

The party was ok, but hampered by the high temperature and high humidity. We never got to see the fire dancers or the surprise prepared by Alamo Drafthouse, although they were inflating the portable screen as we left. We only lasted until 10pm as we’d already reserved our copy of the book at Sam’s last week.

There are a few more photos in the Flickr set.

I already knew that Brendan Canty is playing drums with Bob Mould right now, so it shouldn’t surprise me that that Ian MacKaye is off doing something else as well. Where have I been for the last 6-12 months? This interview pretty much covers it. What’s with the two person bands these days anyway? You can check out three of the songs here, courtesy of NPR. I have to agree with most of the assessments I’ve read. It sounds like the stuff from Instrument with a girl singing. That’s not a bad thing. I’ve generally liked Ian’s voice whether he’s doing something a little quieter or barking it out like a drill sargeant. I’m hoping I haven’t missed any local appearances. I guess we won’t see anything new from Fugazi for a while.

So, I saw Revenge of the Sith last night at Alamo South Lamar. In a nutshell, it suuuuuuuuucked. Quick first impressions, many of which I’ve already read elsewhere:

  • Was Darth Vader’s Frankenstein move intentional? If so, it was lame. If not, it was still lame.
  • What’s with Palpatine chanelling Reagan from The Exorcist after killing Windu? A little over the top, wasn’t it?
  • Absolutely no character development once again. I didn’t give a damn about anybody in the film.
  • Anakin is a moron.
  • The bird/lizard thing that Obi-Wan was riding suuuuuucked.

Perhaps more later. I still haven’t decided if I’ll let The Boy see it. If I don’t, it’ll be more because I can’t sit through it again than the violence or dark themes.

The NY Times and the Village Voice are giving favorable reviews to the movie version of Scott Heim’s 1995 novel, Mysterious Skin, that opens today in NYC. I met Scott at KGB around the time the book was released. We’ve remained friends since then and it’s very exciting to finally have the book translated to film. Unfortunately, if I want to see it in the theater, I’m going to have to travel to Dallas or Houston where it won’t open until July, according to the official site’s showtimes. Scott’s an amazing writer and is finishing up his third book, We Disappear.
