I do not know about you, but this article makes my physically ill and I consider myself more cynical than most. Everyone should read this.
An article from Tuesday’s Washington Post has been making the rounds on The Internets. Apparently the voting machines manufactured by Hart InterCivic, a company based here in Austin, are truncating names of candidates on the final summary screen in Virginia. Since reading the article, I’ve been meaning to double-check that we use the Hart machines here in Texas and wondering if we might have the same problem. Well, this News9Austin article that just appeared in my RSS reader removes any doubt.
Kinky Friedman becomes “Richard ‘Kinky’ F.” Carole Keeton Strayhorn is “Carole Keeton St.” And Texas’ senior senator? Just call her “Kay Bailey Hutch.”
The Washington Post article said that Hart Intercivic hoped to have the problem fixed by next fall. Jean Jensen, secretary of the Virginia State Board of Elections, seemed to be taking the matter seriously. I wonder what Dana DeBouvoir will have to say?
The complicates an already somewhat confusing election. Because of the Supreme Court ruling, two congressional districts in Austin aren’t included in straight ticket voting. For instance, if I want to vote a straight democratic ticket, my U.S. House Rep., Lloyd Doggett, isn’t included in that. I have to be sure that he’s been selected on his own in addition to the straight ticket.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. I’ve always been bummed that I missed the original automats in NYC (Horn and Hardart), but this just doesn’t feel right.

Computer Gaming World Archives – for all your 80’s gaming goodness. Meeeemories….
It’s a good thing Crooks and Liars posts segments from Bill Maher’s show so I can enjoy them without forking over the dough to HBO since I probably wouldn’t watch much else. I opted to wait for the last season of The Sopranos to come out on DVD instead of paying the extra monthly fee.
Check out the last two clips:
Maher on Bush, Bolton, Foley, Hastert, Republicans, Democrats, and… maybe, you.

Smoke on the horizon
We attended a womens’ soccer game yesterday at St. Ed’s. The Hilltoppers beat the MSU-Billings Yellowjackets in a second overtime sudden death, 1-0. You know you were dying to find out the result of that match. It was a beautiful afternoon, but dumbass me forgot to wear sunscreen, so now I look like a red raccoon thanks to my sunglasses. Let the peeling begin!
Driving west on 71 from the game towards a late lunch at Rudy’s BBQ on 360, we noticed a large plume of black smoke on the horizon to the north. We assumed it was north of 183, maybe farther, and resolved to watch the news to find out the source. The Statesman says it was a house on Tisdale near 183 and Lamar. Apparently, it was a remodel gone wrong and no one was injured. The firefighters on scene were delayed in putting out the fire because of a downed electric line.

O-blue-terate Them!
Karl-Thomas of BOR reports that Keep Austin Blue is hosting a happy hour / meetup at Mother Egan’s (near 6th and Rio Grande) tonight at 6:30pm. Democratic candidate for Governor, Chris Bell, will be in attendance along with other local prominent democrats like Rep. Lloyd Doggett and Glen Maxey. It runs until 8pm. Here’s your chance to meet Bell in person and clear up any doubt as to whether he’s your guy.
Update (10.19.2006 11:20AM CDT): If, like me, you didn’t make it out to Mother Egan’s last night, Ben of Lone Star Democracy has video of the speeches by Bell, Doggett, and Courage. Meanwhile, Bell is pulling to the front as the only real challenger to Perry.
