butternut squashThe 10th annual Empty Bowl Project benefiting the Capital Area Food Bank is this Sunday, November 19th from 11am to 3pm at Clayways, 5442 Burnet Road.

We’ve attended the last two years and had a great time sampling the food, music and people. For those that are unfamiliar, local potters create and donate a bowl for the project, you come in on Sunday and pick one out for a $15 donation per bowl and you get to fill it up with your choice of soup from several Austin area restaurants like Wink, Zoot, Eastside Cafe and Hoover’s to name a few. There’s also a silent auction with local celebrity designed and signed bowls. It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season.

delltv.jpgI was listening to the Bush press conference yesterday afternoon on KUT and thought I heard him specifically mention Dell as a brand of television in answering a question. I didn’t think much of it until I saw this post on BoingBoing today.

After watching the video, it doesn’t seem like a stutter, but I also can’t imagine that it was intentional. It seems pretty unlikely that anyone would name Dell as the first brand that comes to mind when discussing “television screens” although they have been pushing them a lot more in the last year or so. Weird.

Only 5 days until Election Day. If you’re not already registered to vote, then you’re hosed, at least here in Austin. You have to be registered 30 days prior to the election in which you’d like to vote. If you are registered, get your ass out there and do it.

Here’s a few things to read an think about over the weekend as you prepare to make your decision:

  • Hearts and BrainsScott sent this New Yorker commentary by Hendrik Hertzberg. It pretty well sums things up.
  • Election, economy and the price of gas – I’m not generally one for conspiracy theories and it seems like this is too complicated to be easily manipulated, but I’m taking note of the current gas price. Let’s see where it is in December or January.
  • The Great Divider – I agree with this 100%. So much for the “compassionate conservative”.
  • Fuck Them – The Rude Pundit on why you should vote against the Republicans this time around. As usual, he doesn’t beat around the Bush (sorry).

It’s impossible not to bring up the recent flap over Kerry’s “joke” in the context of all of this. There’re tons of people across the blogosphere who’ve made valid points about this. It’s a perfect illustration of how screwed up things are right now. I never liked Kerry. I’m still wondering how he got the nomination. At the same time, it’s obvious what he intended when he botched the lame-ass joke, as obvious as what Dick Cheney meant when he referred to waterboarding as a “no-brainer”. Creating a flap over this is just distracting from more important things and the media is a more than willing participant.

Since one of our old posts about the soon-to-be-opened Ikea store in Round Rock was the most visited page last month, I thought I’d update you rabid Ikea maniacs with the news that the aforementioned location finally opens this month on Wednesday, November 15th.

The Ikea website mentions that people can start lining up Monday morning, November 13th for the opening. I’m wondering why the hell you’d want to camp our for two days for an Ikea opening? Do they give away an entire room of furniture or something? Somebody enlighten me.
