I went and checked out Neal Pollack at Bookpeople tonight. He read a few excerpts from the book, Alternadad, a memoir set mostly during the time that he lived in Austin. He read a bit from his blog at the end. He followed the reading with a Q&A which included a question about his reaction to the David Brooks column that slammed his book without actually mentioning his name. Nice.

He’ll be appearing two more times: once at the Rock n Romp at Mohawk on Sunday and once during his SXSW panel on Monday.

I recognized Amanda Marcotte, who made the news recently as the blogger who was hounded out of the John Edwards campaign, in the audience along with Michael Barnett who used to write for Austinist and, apparently, several of Pollack’s old neighbors. From one Alternadad to another, I gave him a copy of my band’s CD. I picked up a copy of the book and he inscribed it “For Tim, there’s nothing in here you don’t already know. Rock On.”

Rock on, indeed. He’s here until Monday. Check him out if you have the chance.

For all you out-of-towners coming to Austin from cities where the public transportation system is widespread, you’re in for a shock. Texans love their cars. That being said, Capital Metro is doing several things that are useful for SXSW attendees without cars, so I thought I’d pass them along.

Some of the highlights are:

  • Ride from the airport to the convention center or your hotel for just 50 cents on the Airport Flyer.
  • Save your cab cash for popcorn and beverages by taking Route 3 to SXSW film theaters.
  • Park & Ride free to the Free Dew Concerts at Auditorium Shores March 15 – 17.
  • $1 day passes are available for purchase on board buses and provide unlimited use of trips for an entire day.
  • Ride the free Dillo service. The `Dillos operate north to south between 23rd Street and Oltorf Road, and east to west from near MoPac at Lake Austin Boulevard to Pleasant Valley Road.

SXSW Baby points out that Capital Metro has become part of the Google Transit Trip Planner.

I also heard on KUT this morning about a new service called Dadnab that lets you text your location and get the nearest bus that will take you to your destination.

For example, you can text “5th & lavaca to barton springs & kinney” to austin [at] dadnab.com (You’d type it like an e-mail address with the at symbol and no spaces. I’m just trying to avoid them getting spammed because of this post.) and get back “W 5TH ST & LAVACA ST to BARTON SPRINGS RD & KINNEY AVE/depart COLORADO & 5TH at 02:00 PM/29-SB/arrive BARTON SPRINGS & JESSIE at 02:08 PM”. Their site has more information on how to use the service. Pretty sweet.

SXSW Music: Bob Mould

bob_sm.jpgBob Mould has a post today on his blog about his two SXSW appearances.

He’ll be at Buffalo Billiards for his showcase on Thursday, 3/15 at 9pm.

He’s also playing at Emo’s Annex during the day on Friday, 3/16. He’s on at 4:45pm.

As he mentions in his post, Bob lived in Austin for several years in the mid-90’s. He played ACL two years ago and was one of the last performers at Liberty Lunch before it was demolished.

Just to show that we’re not all about SXSW over the next couple of weeks, there are two notable events this weekend in Austin unrelated to SXSW.

First, the second Apple store will open at The Domain in north Austin on Friday at 10am. Dave Thorup trekked out there and took some photos yesterday of the final preparations.

Second, Dennis Kucinich will be in town on Saturday to campaign for another presidential bid. Dennis doesn’t have much of a chance, but you’ve got to give him credit for being against the Iraq war from the beginning. He’ll be right downtown amongst all of the SXSWi geeks (including me), so you might have a hard time spotting him.

Update: According to our Seattle Metblog, Starbucks will be giving away free coffee on Thursday, March 15, a little help with that hangover from Wednesday night.

FIJI Flyers at UT

413997613_8bb2471301_m.jpgPrentiss posted a photo of a copy of supposed FIJI pledge rules that appeared all over the UT campus yesterday. The Daily Texan article theorizes that they’re a hoax, which seems likely.

I vividly remember the sambo incident in 1990 when I was attending UT as an undergraduate. Only a few months earlier, I’d naively tried to attend a Fiji party with a few friends. I knew at least one pledge class member that year along with one active member, so I briefly separated from the girls I was with to see if I could find one of them. I was there barely 10 minutes before I was surrounded by at least four Fijis who informed me that I had to leave because I “had an earring”. This was early 1990, so I suppose that guys having their ears pierced was a little out of the ordinary. It seems pretty tame by today’s standards. Anyway, I pointed out that I was with several women who would be leaving the party with me. No dice. I was escorted out along with my friends, never to return.

I’m guessing things haven’t changed much in the last 17 years.

Box office numbers for this past weekend:

#1 “Wild Hogs” ($38 million)
#2 “Zodiac” ($13.1 million)
#3 “Ghost Rider” ($11.5 million)
#4 “Bridge to Terabithia” ($8.5 million)
#5 “The Number 23” ($7 million)

I don’t get out to very many movies these days and, as usual, the options are pretty piss poor to begin with, but the fact that Wild Hogs is the number one film in the country this week, grossing more than twice as much as Zodiac is surely a sign that we deserve the president that we have and that we’re a nation of morons. You may now resume drooling on yourself.

I was forced into another WordPress upgrade this week. My hosting provider upgraded their version of PHP and recommended upgrading into a version of WordPress that was apparently hacked, so I had to upgrade again. I hadn’t ever really done much of a blogroll in the past, so I’m rolling it out now. Check those people out. They’re good stuff.

  • This post covers a lot of topics in one shot, although the title is a bit misleading (seems everyone’s bashing Legos these days). The focus isn’t on Legos at all really, but on society, power, education and and range of other topics.
  • This pretty much sums up the current state of the comics page in newspapers. I need to keep an eye on this strip. Time to check and see if comics are available via RSS feeds.
