When I started using Bloglines, I didn’t have a decent way of bookmarking stuff I read for later. Now, the delicious integration with Firefox and some people’s feeds is better, so I don’t use the Bloglines clipping feature, but I do have a bunch of links sitting in there gathering dust. I’m converting those to delicious, so there’s about six months worth of old stuff about to hit delicious. It’s a good thing I didn’t use the clipping feature too much because it sucks. It’s ended up pointing to the wrong posts on Slashdot, Digg, and a few other sites.

Scott points out that the NY Times published an article about Michael’s new book, Charity Girl, today. Check it out.

The Boy was at a friend’s house this week. The kid, who we’ll call Luigi, is nearly two years older. They both ran up to me when I arrived to pick him up, telling me that I *had* to hear this song. They had the video for it pulled up on Google Video (When are they going to integrate that with YouTube? they’re the same company after all). The song? “Amish Paradise” by Weird Al Yankovic. I suppose it was only a matter of time, since The Boy’s right in Weird Al’s demographic. I told them I’d heard it (more than a few times) and that it’s a parody of Coolio’s “Gangster’s Paradise” (from that laughable movie, Dangerous Minds, with Michele Pfeiffer). After explaining what a parody was, I double-checked and realized that the parody is nearly 11 years old and so is the original. BTW, both songs are reworkings of Stevie Wonder’s “Pastime Paradise”. I’m old.

Dead Bird Verdict? Cold and Bugs
According to News8Austin and some AP stories I’ve seen floating around today, it was parasites and an overnight ten degree temperature drop (doesn’t that happen all the time around here?) that killed 63 birds and caused downtown to effectively shut down last Monday. It’s been interesting to hear the conspiracy theories. I guess that rumor I heard about the poisoning wasn’t true. Not surprisingly, the shutdown cost local businesses quite a bit in lost revenue.
No word yet on what kiled those birds in Australia.
Wha?! The Nuge Performs at the Governor's Ball?
Apparently, The Nuge performed at Governor Rick Perry’s Inaugural Ball on Tuesday night and got a little out of hand.
I’ve got a few questions about this:
- I know The Nuge is now a right wing nutjob, but what’s he doing hanging out with Rick Perry? Political aspirations?
- Isn’t this the sort of thing people expect from The Nuge? Why was anyone shocked?
- Did he play “Wang Dang Sweet Pootang”?

Most of these are common sense. Now that the minivan’s out of warranty, I’d like to start using someone other than the dealership. Anybody know a good Honda Odyssey mechanic in Austin?

I almost bought GH2 as a family present for Xmas. If it’s easy enough to add songs. I may still get it.
Reminder: Metblog Meetup – Tonight – 6-8pm – Gingerman
We’re gonna go ahead and have the meetup tonight at the Gingerman. I don’t know about you, but I need to get out of the house. Of course, if you don’t feel like braving the elements, we’ll understand. Come on out and show us your smiling faces and red noses. If you haven’t started to dig your car out yet, you might want to get on it. It took me 20 or 30 minutes to dig out of the ice on our two cars.

Yep. It snowed earlier and we’re still seeing a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow.

An interesting article about New Yorker cartoonists and cartoonists in New York.

Great post on immigration, in my opinion.

KUT played several excerpts from MLK speeches today. I don’t think I’d heard the one that refers to the Vietnam War. Very relevant. Also, Tony Pierce summed it up well today, http://www.tonypierce.com/blog/2007/01/you-dont-need-teleprompters-when-youre.ht

Glenn Greenwald points out that Bush’s approval rating sinks when he gives a speech and resorts to crazier shit when it happens.
This is pretty short notice, but some of us Metbloggers will be at the Gingerman this Wednesday 6-8pm for a little meetup in meatspace, if you will. Please do come and join us. I know there are at least a few of you out there as the delurking thread has dragged some of you out into the light of day.
I’m assuming that this weather crisis will have passed by then, so we’re proceeding as planned. Incidentally, if we can have some more mass weather hysteria that allows me to drive home unobstructed during the evening rush hour, I’m completely in favor of it. Everyone stay home. It’s *really* dangerous out there. The really amusing part will be when everyone ignores the warnings tomorrow and it really is dangerous.
I’ll be the tall dude with bad facial hair wearing a Communist Party shirt, so I should be easy to spot.
