I’m not sure how I feel about this. I’ve always been bummed that I missed the original automats in NYC (Horn and Hardart), but this just doesn’t feel right.

Computer Gaming World Archives – for all your 80’s gaming goodness. Meeeemories….
It’s a good thing Crooks and Liars posts segments from Bill Maher’s show so I can enjoy them without forking over the dough to HBO since I probably wouldn’t watch much else. I opted to wait for the last season of The Sopranos to come out on DVD instead of paying the extra monthly fee.
Check out the last two clips:
Maher on Bush, Bolton, Foley, Hastert, Republicans, Democrats, and… maybe, you.

Smoke on the horizon
We attended a womens’ soccer game yesterday at St. Ed’s. The Hilltoppers beat the MSU-Billings Yellowjackets in a second overtime sudden death, 1-0. You know you were dying to find out the result of that match. It was a beautiful afternoon, but dumbass me forgot to wear sunscreen, so now I look like a red raccoon thanks to my sunglasses. Let the peeling begin!
Driving west on 71 from the game towards a late lunch at Rudy’s BBQ on 360, we noticed a large plume of black smoke on the horizon to the north. We assumed it was north of 183, maybe farther, and resolved to watch the news to find out the source. The Statesman says it was a house on Tisdale near 183 and Lamar. Apparently, it was a remodel gone wrong and no one was injured. The firefighters on scene were delayed in putting out the fire because of a downed electric line.

O-blue-terate Them!
Karl-Thomas of BOR reports that Keep Austin Blue is hosting a happy hour / meetup at Mother Egan’s (near 6th and Rio Grande) tonight at 6:30pm. Democratic candidate for Governor, Chris Bell, will be in attendance along with other local prominent democrats like Rep. Lloyd Doggett and Glen Maxey. It runs until 8pm. Here’s your chance to meet Bell in person and clear up any doubt as to whether he’s your guy.
Update (10.19.2006 11:20AM CDT): If, like me, you didn’t make it out to Mother Egan’s last night, Ben of Lone Star Democracy has video of the speeches by Bell, Doggett, and Courage. Meanwhile, Bell is pulling to the front as the only real challenger to Perry.
My parents and my father’s two brothers were in town for a visit this past weekend. I was putting the kids to bed last night and came back downstairs to find my sister and father watching the last 10 minutes of the No Reservations episode with Tony Bourdain in Beirut during the Israeli bombardment this past summer. We’d watched a saved episode of No Reservations earlier in the day and it seemed that dad liked that particular episode and took a liking to Bourdain. Dad’s become more and more conservative in the last 10 years and commented at the end of the Beirut episode, “a liberal saved by the marines” or something to that effect.
My immediate thought was something along the lines of being able to disagree with the policies that put him in that situation, but being supportive and appreciative of the marines themselves. Instead, I said nothing. Since he doesn’t do “the Internets”, I intend to bring this back up over the phone the next time I talk to him.
Along similar lines, The Rude One graces us with his take on the situation in Iraq and the Lancet study released last week (something I’d love to get Andy read in depth and provide his take on the methodology even though he’s not particularly versed in mortality projections).
