Wow, that wasn’t a very relaxing Memorial Day weekend.

We drove to Dallas to say farewell to the house my parents have lived in since the summer of 1975 (or was it 1976?). Anyway, they’re selling the place and moving to Oklahoma of all places. It’s a long story. We rented a truck yesterday and hauled a few things back with us since my parents’ new place is a bit smaller. Loading up a truck, driving from Dallas to Austin, then unloading and returning the truck makes for quite a long day. I hadn’t done that in quite some time and I can’t say that I missed it. On top of moving stuff from Dallas, work is very busy right now. I’m just not feeling the start of summer. Perhaps later this month I’ll have a bit of breathing room.

I mentioned the passing of HJR 6 in the Texas House a little while back. It passed the Texas Senate this past week, so we’ll get to vote on it becoming an amendment to the state constitution this November. Yay.

Anyway, I found this Molly Ivins commentary this week which includes the comments of Rep. Senfronia Thompson during the passing of the bill in the house. Also today, I noticed that Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood are engaged. Both have been married previously. Since I’m sure that a lot of the supporters of this bill are fans of those two, perhaps they can tell me when we’ll be passing an amendment to protect the sanctity of marriage from celebrities?

Wink Restaurant
This past Saturday night, The Wife and I secured a babysitter and headed out to belatedly celebrate our anniversary at Wink. We only get over there once ever 12-18 months because it’s a bit expensive with entrees in the $20 range, but it’s well worth it. We’ve been 5-10 times since it took over the spot once held by Ay Chiwawa and Castle Hill in 2001 and it’s been sublime every time.

I try not to use terms like orgasmic, unparalleled or out-of-this-world, but this place makes it difficult. I’m not just saying this because we’re acquainted with Gary, who’s in charge of Wink’s impressive wine selection, and Debra, who’s one of the most experienced wait staff in town, from The Wife’s days of food service at Mars. The place would still be a favorite regardless of who’s serving the food or choosing the wine. The rest of the staff is equally professional, knowledgeable and attentive with Mark and Brendan tending to the arrivals and a waitstaff of four or five serving the 15 tables.

So, I saw Revenge of the Sith last night at Alamo South Lamar. In a nutshell, it suuuuuuuuucked. Quick first impressions, many of which I’ve already read elsewhere:

  • Was Darth Vader’s Frankenstein move intentional? If so, it was lame. If not, it was still lame.
  • What’s with Palpatine chanelling Reagan from The Exorcist after killing Windu? A little over the top, wasn’t it?
  • Absolutely no character development once again. I didn’t give a damn about anybody in the film.
  • Anakin is a moron.
  • The bird/lizard thing that Obi-Wan was riding suuuuuucked.

Perhaps more later. I still haven’t decided if I’ll let The Boy see it. If I don’t, it’ll be more because I can’t sit through it again than the violence or dark themes.

I’ve mentioned before that my father-in-law works for NPR’s Morning Edition and that I sometimes hear him on-air. Well, it seems that everyone I know is getting their NPR on this month. Sean, founder of Metroblogging, parent of Austin Metroblogging, is in two pieces by Xeni Jardin for Day to Day and Scott just recorded an episode of Fresh Air with Gregg Araki about Mysterious Skin. No word yet on when that will air.

Hmm…people I know getting on NPR the same week that controversy breaks over attempts to crack down on it. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

I’ve been using AllConsuming for my currently reading or “Legere” block over there on the right for quite a while. Unfortunately, it was hacked a little over a month ago, so the creator, Erik Benson, decided to revamp the site and rewrite it using Ruby on Rails, which boasts quick development time. I think he even challenged himself to do it in 24 hours as some sort of contest promoting the platform.

Anyway, he did get something up and running…only it doesn’t completely work. He’s reformatted how items that you’re consuming are displayed and I can’t seem to edit old items without running into errors. I don’t want to nag the guy over a service that he’s providing for free, but until he gets a chance to work out some of the issues, I’m going back to pulling my own images and linking to Amazon directly. The convenient thing about allconsuming is that I didn’t have to host the product images myself.

Zorlac
I’ve alluded to this before, but now it’s official. Our neighborhood park, Mabel Davis, is getting a skatepark. The city council approved it yesterday. It should be finished this fall along with all of the “soil remediation” aka “cleanup of pesticides and lead from battery casings that were dumped there when the park was a landfill”. They’ve tentatively scheduled a visit to allow folks in the neighborhood to see how that cleanup is progressing on June 21st. If you’d like to keep up with the progress, check out the Yahoo Group that’s been set up. Note that despite what the City of Austin Summer 2005 Aquatic Brochure says, the pool will be closed this summer because of the cleanup.

Growing up in the late 70’s/early 80’s I would’ve given my right arm to have a skatepark within walking distance of my house. I still maintain that I would’ve beaten out that damn Tony Hawk if only suburban Dallas had anything remotely skate friendly. Hey, allow me my middle-aged delusions. I still remember walking around Valley View Mall and drooling at the skate shop that was at the center near the food court.

I’m hoping my 6-year-old son will appreciate what he’s about to get. I think I’m smart enough not to dig up my old Zorlac and relive old glories once the park opens, but if you see me walking around with a cast this winter, you’ll know what happened.

Satan's Cheerleaders
Well, the now infamous cheerleading bill appears to have died in the Texas Senate. I suppose Al Edwards (D-Houston) got whatever political mileage he wanted out of it, although I’m at a loss to see what positive effect it could have on his current or future political career. At the very least, he now has the honor of being the subject of one of the infamous Daily Show “interviews” with the always creepy Bob Wiltfong. Those of you in his district can use the state house link to let him know if you think this was a good use of legislative time or if he should be doing something else. He’s certainly proof that stupidity (or at least shameless grandstanding) comes from either side of the aisle.

Lending further proof to the notion that you take for granted what’s in your own backyard, it took a post from Fleshbot to remind me that Austin’s very own Satan’s Cheerleaders might have something to say about Rep. Edwards and his crusade. It does my heart good to see the Cheerleaders are still in full form. If you’ve never checked out a Flametrick Subs show with Satan’s Cheerleaders, you’re clearly not a true Austinite. They’ve been throwing it down for at least 6 or 7 years, starting out at the now burned-and-gutted, but still legendary, Black Cat Lounge.

I noticed this photo in the Metro section of the Statesman today. It’s a cool shot of a lightning strike and the Thundercloud Subs on Riverside near the Statesman offices during yesterday’s storms.

They’ve also got a feature on the Real World – Austin cast. Apparently, filming wraps up this week. The finished product airs June 21st. I thought the two most interesting bits of information in the article were:

  1. Their favorite bar downtown is Dizzy Rooster!?!?! Why am I not surprised?
  2. Nehemiah, the only african-american cast member is “The least in love with Austin.”. Hmmm, could that have something to do with the recent forums on the quality of life in Austin for African Americans? I wonder.

Finally, I hadn’t noticed this until today, but what the hell is Michael Corcoran doing writing sports columns? I thought he was a music critic?
