Following up on this post, there’s another story in the LA Times. I also just got a response from the e-mail that I sent Lloyd Doggett yesterday about this. I guess he can’t actually do anything himself since he isn’t on the House Intelligence Committee. If you live in an area represented by one of the members, it’d be very good to nudge them with a call or an e-mail, especially if it’s Peter Hoekstra (MI) or Jane Harman (CA).

If I didn’t know better, I’d think that Congressman Doggett actually wrote the response himself.

Dear Tim:

Thank you for expressing your concerns regarding public access to the findings of inquiries relating to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, as well as for sharing the Los Angeles Times article with me. I appreciate your comments and, as a long-time supporter of government openness and accountability, certainly agree that the public has a right to know what evidence the Administration possesses regarding failures in intelligence related to the events on September 11, 2001.

Also, thank you for your kind words, which really made my day. I will continue my efforts to earn your support. As always, please keep me advised of any federal matters on which I may be of assistance.

Sincerely,
Lloyd

If this is true, it’s huge and it’d better be released before November 2nd. I’ve e-mailed my congressman and both senators about this already. This needs to get top billing from all of the major networks once it’s confirmed. We all need to demand the release of this report and we know that Porter Goss, the new CIA director and a partisan Republican, will be sympathetic to the Bush administration regardless of whatever he said in his confirmation hearings a few weeks ago.

Out of town on a rail or a bus or…

For those of us that have managed to decide the larger contest facing us this November 2nd, I thought I’d turn our attention to what’s shaping up to be a big local issue, Capital Metro’s All Systems Go rail plan.

The Austin Chronicle has posted some of their take on it already. I’m guessing that the next couple of Chronicles before the election will have more information. The chief opponent of the current plan is Mike Dahmus. He’s got several posts on his blog over the past couple of months about why he thinks this is not the plan that should be approved. There’s some great discussion there and I think he presents a compelling case.

Those of you who have been in town a few years will remember that, despite some vocal support, a light rail plan was narrowly defeated in November of 2000. If you’ve made up your mind already, early voting started this week. Get out there and do your thing.

In searching for a few links for this post, I also found some people who advocate a Monorail for Austin. The idea may have merit, but all I can think of is the classic Simpsons episode.

There are two things getting a lot of linkage over the past few days. Actually, there’s a third, but I already posted about that on Friday.

Busy weekend. We hosted one birthday party, attended another, attended a wedding, went to soccer game and checked out Dogtoberfest at the GMan.

EDIT: Ok. One more echo. John Perry Barlow has a plan for Iraq. It has a certain pragmatism and he touches on a lot of key issues that I wish we had heard Kerry and Bush discuss in the first foreign policy debate. But, of course, I’m expecting too much.

Oh, how I wish that Crossfire had re-runs. Please, please, please somebody post a torrent of this. I have to see it for myself.

EDIT:BoingBoing linked a torrent about 5 minutes after I posted this.

I love you Intarweb. I love you Jon Stewart.

EDIT 2: For those that are Bittorrent shy, here’s some other possibilities for checking this out.

EDIT 3: Not surprisingly, Lisa Rein also has a bunch of linked versions of this.

The Austin edition of Sean Bonner and Jason DeFillippo’s Metroblogging was launched this week and I’ve signed on as one of the bloggers.

Small world, it turns out that Sean and I went to school together briefly, although he was a few years behind me and I don’t believe we ever knew each other existed. He’s partly responsible for the Elian True flash movie that made the rounds a few years ago. I’ve been cross posting to Austinbloggers for a while now, but I thought that it would be cool to get involved with this. I see that Jon Lebkowsky and Marc Savlov from the Austin Chronicle are also signed up.

I thought I’d throw out a few cool things to do this week.

bluedog_spay.gifTomorrow night, there’s the Third Annual Chronicle-Fado Adult Spelling Bee benefitting the Austin Public Library. There’s also a screening of Small Ball, a documentary about a little league team from Aptos, California trying to reach the World Series in the summer of 2002. The filmmakers will be in attendance.

Sunday is Dogtoberfest at the Gingerman benefitting Blue Dog Rescue. They’ve had a benefit for the past several years, but this one promises to be the largest yet.
