Get ’em while they’re hot.
Amazon was running a great rebate deal on the Nokia 3650 which basically has them and AT&T or T-Mobile paying you $20 to get the phone with a 2 year contract. Since this phone is the uber-geek phone with a JVM, Symbian OS, camera, Bluetooth, and infrared among other thing, I fell for it hook, line and sinker. Of course, since I already had another contract with AT&T, this means that Mary now has a cell phone as well. I had to upgrade my existing phone to a 3595 because in order for us to have a shared plan we both have to be on the GSM/GPRS network as opposed to TDMA which is what my existing phone was on. The coolest (read as geekiest) thing about this is that with the new phone, I can now moblog. I’m going to permanently link this somewhere, but you can check out the first post (and subsequent posts) here. It’s setup such that I can take a picture with the phone, attach it to an email with whatever text I want and send it to the site. It’ll automagically post the text and picture as an entry on the moblog. Pretty sweet.
We went over to Ted and Jenny’s for dinner tonight to meet Tess. Kids and grown-ups had a good time. I’ll post pictures from the digital camera later tonight or tomorrow.
Burnt Orange Report has an amusing summary of last night’s California governor candidate debate. I don’t doubt it’s accuracy. I don’t know if it was possible to see it here, but I wish I had watched some of it last night instead of spending my time breaking the site. I really need to get a local copy running at home so I can make changes and test them before uploading them. What a novel idea…
So, I attempted to complete an upgrade of phpNuke last night and botched it. The comments are screwed up in a few different ways. Don’t know if I’ll get to fixing it tonight. I’m sure my massive readership will be able to endure this temporary hardship.
Sophia took a few pictures of the kids at Odd Friday. They weren’t there very long as The Wife and I had a miscommunication. We ran a babysitting service over the weekend, watching W. on Saturday and H. on Sunday. The La was fascinated by the boys with platinum blonde hair. She kept patting W. on the head. I suppose she was checking to see if it was real hair.
Tomorrow is The Company’s 5th anniversary, celebrations are planned for the afternoon and evening. Of course, The Boy’s school planned Back to School Night for tomorrow as well. The Wife’s going to shuttle between both events. I’ll stay at the work party. I’m teaching a Freenet class on Saturday and next week will see visits to Austin by Turbonegro and Neal Stephenson.
Oh yeah, this story is absolutely fucking ridiculous and one of the reasons why I don’t relish dealing with other parents at school. There’s always someone who’s got to be offended by something, let the whole world know about it, and then impose their own worldview on everyone else. I’ve only been the parent of a school age child for a month and I’ve already had to deal with this. I kept my mouth shut at the time because the issue really wasn’t worth it, but you can bet if something like this happens at a school my child attends, I’ll be there to talk some sense into them. At least it sounds like the school board in this case is reasonable.
More baby chaos from today along with new pictures of the week for both kids. The La’s is from today and The Boy’s is from Saturday.
I heard mention of this on NPR and just read more on CNN this morning. Funny how no one in the administration felt the need to explicitly point this out until six months after invading Iraq. They still can’t seem to get the story straight among themselves as Cheney still seems to be sticking to the earlier story. He must’ve been at an "undisclosed location" when they had the meeting about changing their tune. There’s also this report today about comments from Hans Blix who likens the U.S. and U.K.’s case against Iraq to a witch hunt. Nice.
It’s Paul Krugman mania around here. I can’t get enough of this guy. This past weeks NY Times magazine has a great article (registration required, blah blah) on what my man Paul calls "the Tax Cut Con". I also stumbled on his official web site, previously found here.
If you’re a Texas resident and haven’t already, you need to get out and vote tomorrow. I know it’s just boring propositions and amendments to the Texas constitution, but some of them are important.
The much debated Proposition 12 is probably the one that will generated the most attendance. I came at this one with an open mind. It addresses an issue that’s a hot topic across the nation, medical malpractice and the cost of malpractice insurance. My father’s a surgeon and his malpractice insurance has skyrocketed over the past couple of years. You’d think that’d make me an immediate supporter of prop. 12. Nope. I definitely agree that something needs to be done, but this ain’t it. Feel free to do your own research and decide for yourself, googling "malpractice" and "cap" should give you a wealth of things to read both for and against. Burnt Orange Report has some good info on all of the propositions on the ballot (skewed to my viewpoint, of course). I generally agree with most of his recommendations, but will probably vote a little differently. Be sure to check out some more recent entries on the redistricting fiasco.
